                        Obstetrics and Gynaecology

Obstetrics and gynaecology is a run-through specialty training programme which lasts for a minimum of 7 years.

ST1/2

Basic Training - Part 1 MRCOG to be completed

ST3-5

Intermediate Training - Part 2 and 3 MRCOG to be completed

ST6-7

Advanced Training - either 2 Special Interest Training Modules or 1 subspecialty

To apply for ST1 Obstetrics and gynaecology training you must have less than 24 months experience in obstetrics and gynaecology (whole time equivalent, not including Foundation Training) by the advertised post start date for the vacancy. All experience in posts at any level in this specialty count, irrespective of the country the experience is gained. If you have more than 24 months experience please consider ST3 entry to Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

    • Good basic IT skills, including Microsoft Office, email and ability to learn new systems

  • Academic Knowledge

    • Understanding of research, including awareness of ethical issues

    • Understanding of the basic principles of audit, clinical risk management, evidence-based practice, patient safety, and clinical quality improvement initiatives

    • Knowledge of evidence-informed practice

  • Personal Skills

    • Commitment to personal and professional development

    • Ability to work on own initiative, demonstrating curiosity

    • Strong attention to detail, preparation and planning

    • Ability to communicate messages effectively to a range of audiences

    • Ability to negotiate and build positive professional relationships

    • Strong problem-solving skills, with an analytical/scientific approach to problem solving

  • Commitment to Specialty

    • Demonstrable interest in, and understanding of, a career in Obstetrics and Gynaecology as practiced in the UK

  • Qualifications

    • Formal academic achievement is not a prerequisite for application to Obstetrics and Gynaecology at ST1 level, but relevant achievements will be considered as part of the overall assessment of an application.

    • BSc, BA, MSc (not including intercalated BSc or ‘Honorary’ MA)

    • MD or PhD (NB. Only if awarded for defending a thesis. This equates to undertaking 2-3 years FTE spent in research with minimal daytime clinical activity)

  • Clinical Skills

    • Relevant experience in other specialties which would complement a career in Obstetrics and Gynaecology

Process:

Step 1: Longlisting against criteria listed above

Step 2: MSRA examination - all longlisted applicants need to sit the MSRA examination

Step 3: Those scoring highly will not be required to sit an interview and those scoring too low will be removed from the application process

Step 4: Those in between will be required to sit an interview
