ACCS Anaesthetics and ST1 Anaesthetics
Both of these are valid start points for training in Anaesthetics and enable you to be eligible for higher specialty training in Anaesthetics at ST4. Anaesthetics training is split into Stage 1, Stage 2 and Stage 3. These pathways fulfil Stage 1 and a further application is made to access Stage 2.
ACCS Anaesthetics
Year 1:
Acute Medicine 6 months
Emergency Medicine 6 months
Year 2:
Intensive Care Medicine 6 months
Anaesthetics 6 months
Year 3/4:
Anaesthetics 24 months to gain additional competencies to qualify for entry into Stage 2 Anesthetic Training (ST4 level)
ST1 Anaesthetics
Year 1 - 3: Anaesthetics and Intensive Care Medicine
To apply for anaesthetics training via ACCS or ST1 you must have less than 24 months experience in Anaesthetics (whole time equivalent, not including Foundation Training) by the advertised post start date for the vacancy. All experience in posts at any level in this specialty count, irrespective of the country the experience is gained.
ACCS Anaesthetics and ST1 Anaesthetics Desirable Criteria:
Understanding of NHS management and resources
Experience of management
Experience of audit and quality improvement
Experience of teaching
Experience of research
Clinical Skills
Recognition of, and ability to undertake the initial management of an acutely ill patient
Ability to prioritise according to clinical need
Ability to maximise safety and minimise risk whilst working under pressure
Ability to apply sound clinical knowledge and judgment to problems
Qualifications
Additional related qualifications e.g. BSc, BA, BMedSci or equivalent (not including intercalated BSc or ‘Honorary’ MA)
