Internal Medicine Training

IMT is a 3 year programme leading to eligibility for application to all medical specialties. Rotations are every 4-6 months and cover a range of medical specialties. Experience in geriatrics, intensive care and outpatients is mandatory for completion of the programme. For some specialties only 2 years of IMT is required however those exiting at this point forfeit the opportunity to apply for the full range of medical specialties without further training and development.


Group 1 specialties require completion of 3 years IMT - completion of higher training results in dual training with Internal Medicine

  • Acute Internal Medicine

  • Cardiology

  • Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics

  • Endocrinology and Diabetes Mellitus

  • Gastroenterology

  • Genitourinary Medicine

  • Geriatric Medicine

  • Infectious Diseases (except when dual with Medical Microbiology or Virology)

  • Neurology

  • Palliative Medicine

  • Renal Medicine

  • Rheumatology

  • Stroke Medicine

  • Tropical Medicine (except when dual with Medical Microbiology or Virology)


Group 2 specialties require completion of 2 years IMT

  • Allergy Medicine

  • Audiovestibular Medicine

  • Aviation and Space Medicine

  • Clinical Genetics

  • Clinical Neurophysiology

  • Dermatology

  • Haematology

  • Immunology

  • Infectious Diseases (when dual with Medical Microbiology or Virology)

  • Medical Oncology

  • Medical Ophthalmology

  • Nuclear Medicine

  • Paediatric Cardiology

  • Pharmaceutical Medicine

  • Rehabilitation Medicine

  • Sport and Exercise Medicine

  • Tropical Medicine (when dual with Medical Microbiology or Virology)


Chemical Pathology, Clinical Oncology, Medical Microbiology, Medical Virology and Occupational Medicine will also recruit trainees who have completed the first 2 years of IMT. Trainees will also be able to apply for Intensive Care Medicine single CCT training after 2 years of IMT.


IMT Application Evidence:

IMT applications are shortlisted based on a scoring checklist of achievements therefore it is important to have a evidence for each section particularly around teaching and leadership. This could be a certificate or a letter from a consultant you have worked with.
